Interesting Things Along The Way

Starting from the Pilot Station Maritime Museum and heading up to the Historic Lighthouse Precinct, you can see the metal penguin sculptures. On the way back to George Town turn at the first left into East Beach road, you could stop for a BBQ and then, slightly further along, see chainsaw artist Eddie Freeman's East Beach Tree Sculptures . On the way back to George Town you will pass two mini lighthouses, one near the road, and the other closer to the shore (turn at the Bowls Club sign). These are the Tamar River Leading Lights. More of Eddie's tree sculptures can be found at Windmill Point at the sea end of Macquarie Street. A guide to an Historic Walking Tour of George Town can be obtained at the Pilots Station Musuem, the Watch House and the Tourist information Centre if you feel like a walk with history. Of interest , if you're keen on public art, are the street mosaics embedded in the footpath of Macquarie Street, the Rusty Pelican sculpture. Textile enthusiasts would no doubt enjoy the Bicentenary Quilts at the Jim Mooney Gallery and also the What Bass & Flinders Saw quilts at the Bass & Flinders Maritime Museum, which itself is worth a look for the replica of the sloop Norfolk. Other public art attractions include Water Tower Mural (the oldest mural of it's kind in Australia), the rusty pelican and his friend the steel seal, there is more art stuff listed in Lighthouse Regional Art group's Art Trail. The first Sunday of each month brings classic cars and enthusiasts to town for Classic Cars and Coffee. This page is by no means compreshensive and further interesting things may be found on Discover Tasmania's website or phone the Tourist Information Centre on (03) 6382 1700.
